Palo Duro Canyon

Palo Duro Canyon

Palo Duro Canyon State Park opened on July 4, 1934 and contains 29,182 acres of the scenic, northern most portion of the Palo Duro Canyon. The Civilian Conservation Corp of the 1930's constructed most of the buildings and roads still in use by park staff and visitors.
The Canyon is 120 miles long, as much as 20 miles wide, and has a maximum depth of more than 800 feet. Its elevation at the rim is 3,500 feet above sea level. It is often claimed that Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States. The largest, the Grand Canyon, is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide, and 6,000 ft. deep.

Palo Duro Canyon was formed by water erosion from the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. The water deepens the canyon by moving sediment downstream. Wind and water erosion gradually widen the canyon.

Early Spanish Explorers are believed to have discovered the area and dubbed the canyon "Palo Duro" which is Spanish for "hard wood" in reference to the abundant mesquite and juniper trees.

Humans have resided in the canyon for approximately 12,000 years. Early settlers were nomadic tribes that hunted mammoth, giant bison, and other large game animals. Later, Apache Indians lived in the canyon, but were soon replaced by Comanche and Kiowa tribes who resided in the area until 1874. At that time, Col. Ranald Mackenzie was sent into the area to transport the Native Americans to Oklahoma. Col. Mackenzie and the 4th Cavalry were able to capture more than 1,400 horses belonging to the tribe. After keeping some of the best horses for themselves, the remainder were taken to nearby Tule Canyon and destroyed. Cut off from their only means of transportation, the Native Americans soon surrendered.
In 1876, Charles Goodnight entered the canyon and opened the JA Ranch. At its peak, the ranch supported more than 100,000 head of cattle. Goodnight operated the ranch until 1890. Although only a fraction of its original size, the JA Ranch remains a working ranch today.

Duro CIA (New England Quarter)

Duro CIA (New England Quarter)

Excuse the fukked up face but he wanted it blurred. Duro was flown in from NYC especially to paint at the jam, see the breaking-fest at the university of arts and to give an interview at the Fresh Styles film festival about what it was like to have lived through the point in time when the trains of New York were adorned with internationally recognized names like Seen, Dondi and Iz. He had a really great personality and was really pleasant to chat too when he painted at the Jam. He had a whole collection of merchandise with him inlcuding a Dondi Candy Bar, T-Shirts and Style Wars Revisited DVD's. I got a signed Candy Bar! See bottom comments!

4 of 7 :: Applying myself.

4 of 7 :: Applying myself.

So tonight I'm filling out a job application.
Fun.

I just want to say hi to everyone, and also issue a huge apology for this round of 7 Days.
The timing of this round has fallen squarely in the middle of 4 weeks of clinical placement. I have been looking through the group pool, enjoying everyones photos, and commenting where possible.

But due to time constraints I haven't been able to comment nearly as much as I would like. For now I seem to be picking random sections of the pool and commenting until guilt tells me I need to return to an assignment, or I need to get sleep so I can wake up and go be nice to my patients again.

I know this group is filled with wonderful people who always understand when life gets in the way.

Thank you everyone for you comments on my photos, and I promise to try my hardest to comment on yours too, but if I miss you, please don't think I'm a snob, I'm just crazy tired, and perhaps a little stressed.

The life of a student nurse. It's certainly not glamorous. :)

That's how many studs I had to pull out of my old winter tires so I could use them in the summer and save $500 on summer tires (I live in a place where there are real seasons and "all season" tires are a joke). Yes, I'm cheap, but I rationalized the painful hours and blisters on my hand by thinking about what kind of photo gear I could get now that I don't need to buy new tires :)

Strobist info:

SB-24 @ 1/4 with straw grid camera left, SB-24 @ 1/8 with straw grind at camera right, SB-24 @ 1/2 low and behind subject for rim light. Rim light is subtle but adds an extra dimension. However, it resulted in a lot of dust removal in PS. A lot.
