Palo Duro Canyon

Palo Duro Canyon

Palo Duro Canyon State Park opened on July 4, 1934 and contains 29,182 acres of the scenic, northern most portion of the Palo Duro Canyon. The Civilian Conservation Corp of the 1930's constructed most of the buildings and roads still in use by park staff and visitors.
The Canyon is 120 miles long, as much as 20 miles wide, and has a maximum depth of more than 800 feet. Its elevation at the rim is 3,500 feet above sea level. It is often claimed that Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States. The largest, the Grand Canyon, is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide, and 6,000 ft. deep.

Palo Duro Canyon was formed by water erosion from the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. The water deepens the canyon by moving sediment downstream. Wind and water erosion gradually widen the canyon.

Early Spanish Explorers are believed to have discovered the area and dubbed the canyon "Palo Duro" which is Spanish for "hard wood" in reference to the abundant mesquite and juniper trees.

Humans have resided in the canyon for approximately 12,000 years. Early settlers were nomadic tribes that hunted mammoth, giant bison, and other large game animals. Later, Apache Indians lived in the canyon, but were soon replaced by Comanche and Kiowa tribes who resided in the area until 1874. At that time, Col. Ranald Mackenzie was sent into the area to transport the Native Americans to Oklahoma. Col. Mackenzie and the 4th Cavalry were able to capture more than 1,400 horses belonging to the tribe. After keeping some of the best horses for themselves, the remainder were taken to nearby Tule Canyon and destroyed. Cut off from their only means of transportation, the Native Americans soon surrendered.
In 1876, Charles Goodnight entered the canyon and opened the JA Ranch. At its peak, the ranch supported more than 100,000 head of cattle. Goodnight operated the ranch until 1890. Although only a fraction of its original size, the JA Ranch remains a working ranch today.

Duro CIA (New England Quarter)

Duro CIA (New England Quarter)

Excuse the fukked up face but he wanted it blurred. Duro was flown in from NYC especially to paint at the jam, see the breaking-fest at the university of arts and to give an interview at the Fresh Styles film festival about what it was like to have lived through the point in time when the trains of New York were adorned with internationally recognized names like Seen, Dondi and Iz. He had a really great personality and was really pleasant to chat too when he painted at the Jam. He had a whole collection of merchandise with him inlcuding a Dondi Candy Bar, T-Shirts and Style Wars Revisited DVD's. I got a signed Candy Bar! See bottom comments!

Allen is this young redhead neighbor of my friend's Aaron and Jenny. The dogs go nuts, barking non-stop and going wild at every sighting of him. This has happened every trip up here for the last two years and I have no clue as to why.

Goodyear Dedicated Services: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Goodyear Dedicated Services: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

By LeeAnn McCoy, Goodyear Stockbridge

The finish line was in sight as I quickly made my way through the enormous crowd. A warm feeling crept up inside me knowing that Schneider associates were making a difference in the lives of many women across the country.

As I was working in the office one day, Ricky Pinkston, a Dedicated Goodyear driver approached me with a brochure for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides campaign. His wife, Darlene is a five-year breast cancer survivor who is now cancer-free and making strides to help save lives. I thought this would be a great opportunity for the Goodyear Dedicated account to make a difference in the community and contribute to the Big Orange Volunteer Challenge.

On October 23, over 15,000 people began the 3.5-mile walk through downtown Atlanta as the crowd was cheering loudly and cars were honking as they passed by. On this very special day, a grand total of just over $853,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society. As I crossed that finish line with Ricky and his wife, I knew that day we had made a difference. Great strides have been made in breast cancer research and I hope that through this walk we can have a world with more birthdays and less cancer.

Two years ago, National Waste Services, now a part of Green for Life (GFL) Environmental Corp., began a test program to see if the company could get more miles to removal and reduce its tire operating costs by switching from a deep lug tire, which is a typical tire of choice among waste haulers. The company now uses the Goodyear G287 MSA and Goodyear G287 MSA retreads on roll-off trucks rear-loaders that operate on pavement in stop-and-go traffic in densely populated urban areas, and don't go into landfills. In April of 2011, National Waste Services along with two other companies, Enviro West and Direct Line Environmental, combined operations and became GFL.

A very Arts and Crafts pub, I think. I'm not an expert on old cars so I can't identify it. It's nicely done up, with white wall tyres though.

All tram lines and bits of lint irretrievably stuck in the emulsion are courtesy of the Agfa lab where I got this developed.
